FACT FOLLY FARCE
Normandie Palms is pleased to present its inaugural exhibition Fact, Folly, Farce, a group show featuring works by Brian Rochefort, Ross Rudel, and Jason Tomme. In lieu of an opening reception, our organization will host private appointments allowing for alternative and unconventional engagements. It is our aim to re-negotiate the settings and traditions of art viewership by finding ways to integrate art-centric discourse into domestic banality.
Reflecting on classic aesthetic traditions such as the still-life, nude portraiture, and rendered landscapes this exhibition aims to re-contextualize these notions as they permeate into contemporary art practices. The prominent use of proletariat materials such as graphite, ceramic-clay, and wood, question the hierarchical structures from which these archetypes originate and the institutional perceptions that deem them austere. For whom are these traditions intended? And how does one negotiate their role within a contemporary cultural canon?
From anthropomorphic silhouettes to indexical materials that echo their environment, these pieces blur the lines between art-historical homage and pure enigmatic whimsy. Functional structures are transformed into painterly sculptures and academic still-life to surreal allegory. The qualities embedded in these works highlight the significance of narrative story-telling within the creative process as well as the often arbitrary, yet regimented, distinctions that classify them as art.
